16. GREEN CHEMISTRY AND NANOCHEMISTRY Textbook Solution

4. Answer the following

iii. How will you illustrate the principle, minimization of steps ?

Answer:-

A commonly used technique in organic synthesis is the use of protecting or blocking groups. Unnecessary derivatization (such as the installation or removal of protecting groups) should be minimized or avoided if possible because such steps require additional reagents and can generate waste.

Illustration: In organic synthesis, the frequent need arises to protect certain functional groups, only to later remove these protections. This is exemplified in the synthesis of m-hydroxybenzoic acid from m-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Clearly, in such cases, atom economy is compromised. Green chemistry principles aim to develop methodologies where unnecessary steps should be avoided whenever feasible. Biocatalytic reactions often eliminate the need for protecting selective groups.
