3. Answer the following

iv. Give two evidences for presence of formyl group in glucose.

Answer:-

  • Glucose undergoes oxidation when exposed to bromine water, a mild oxidizing agent, resulting in the formation of a six-carbon monocarboxylic acid known as gluconic acid. This oxidation suggests that the carbonyl group in glucose exists in the form of a formyl group (-CHO).

  • The hemiacetal group present in the glucopyranose structure of glucose is a potential aldehyde, specifically a formyl group. This formyl group imparts reducing properties to glucose, causing it to yield positive results in tests such as the Tollen’s test or Fehling test.
