Chapter 2  Solutions Class 12 Chemistry Maharashtra Board Textbook Solution

3. Answer the following.

iv. The osmotic pressure of CaCl2 and urea solutions of the same concentration at
the same temperature are respectively 0.605 atm and 0.245 atm. Calculate van’t Hoff factor for CaCl2

Answer:-
\begin{align*} \text{Given:} & \\ \text{Osmotic pressure of CaCl}_2 \text{ solution} &= 0.605 \, \text{atm} \\ \text{Osmotic pressure of urea solution} &= 0.245 \, \text{atm} \\ \\ \text{To find:} & \text{The value of van’t Hoff factor} \\ \\ \text{Formulae:} & \pi = MRT, \pi = iMRT \\ \\ \text{Calculation for urea solution:} & \\ \pi &= MRT \\ 0.245 \, \text{atm} &= MRT \quad \ldots \text{(i)} \\ \\ \text{Calculation for CaCl}_2 \text{ solution:} & \\ \pi &= iMRT \\ 0.605 \, \text{atm} &= iMRT \quad \ldots \text{(ii)} \\ \\ \text{From equations (i) and (ii),} & \\ \frac{0.605}{0.245} &= \frac{iMRT}{MRT} \\ \therefore i &= 2.47 \\ \\ \text{The value of van’t Hoff factor is} & \, 2.47. \end{align*}
