Chapter 2  Solutions Class 12 Chemistry Maharashtra Board Textbook Solution

2. Answer the following in one or two sentences

v. What is van’t Hoff factor?

Answer:-

van’t Hoff factor (i)

van’t Hoff factor (i) is defined as the ratio of colligative property of a solution of electrolyte divided by the colligative property of a nonelectrolyte solution of the same concentration.

Thus,

i =

$$\frac{\text{colligative property of electrolyte solution}}{\text{colligative property of nonelectrolyte solution of the same concentration}}$$

$$= \frac{\Delta T_f}{\Delta T_{f_0}} = \frac{\Delta T_b}{\Delta T_{b_0}} = \frac{\Delta P}{\Delta P_0} = \frac{\pi}{\pi_0}$$

where quantities without subscript refer to electrolytes and those with subscript to nonelectrolytes.
