12. ALDEHYDES, KETONES AND CARBOXYLIC ACIDS

3. Answer in brief.

vii. Arrange the following carboxylic acids with increasing order of their acidic strength and justify your answer.

vi. Arrange the following carboxylic acids

Answer:-

  1. The increasing order of acidic strength is 2 > 3 > 1.

  2. Oxygen atoms are electronegative and have an electron-withdrawing inductive effect (-I effect).

  3. Compounds (2) and (3) are more acidic compared to compound (1) because of the -I effect of the oxygen atom.

  4. However, the inductive effect decreases as the oxygen in the ring moves away from the carboxyl group.

  5. Therefore, compound (3) is less acidic than compound (2) because the oxygen in compound (3) is further away from the carboxyl group, reducing the -I effect.
