chapter 15. INTRODUCTION TO POLYMER CHEMISTRY Class 12 Chemistry Textbook Solution

4. Attempt the following :

vi. Write preparation, properties and uses of Teflon

Answer:-

Preparation of Teflon: Teflon is synthesized using the monomer tetrafluoroethylene (CF₂ = CF₂), which exists as a gas at room temperature. Polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene is achieved through the use of free-radical initiators like hydrogen peroxide or ammonium persulphate, often carried out under high-pressure conditions. This process yields polytetrafluoroethylene, commonly known as Teflon.

\[\ce{\underset{Tetrafluoroethylene}{{n} CF2 = CF2}->[Polymerization][Peroxide]\underset{Teflon}{[-CF2 – CF2 -]}_{n}}\]

Properties of Teflon:
Teflon exhibits several noteworthy properties, including toughness, chemical inertness, and resistance to both heat and corrosive reagents. The C–F bond within Teflon is exceptionally strong and resistant to degradation by corrosive alkalis and organic solvents.

Uses:
Teflon finds wide-ranging applications in the manufacturing of non-stick cookware, oil seals, gaskets, and various other products.
